Cal-Maine Foods slaughters 1.6 million laying hens and 337,000 young hens. The virus was also found at a Michigan poultry facility.
The company said there is no known risk of bird flu associated with eggs currently on the market. Properly handled and cooked eggs are safe, the Department of Agriculture said. The announcement comes a day after Texas health authorities reported that a person was diagnosed with bird flu after being in contact with suspected infected cows. The human case in Texas is the first known case in the world of a person contracting this version of birdflu from a mammal.
