Igar Lednik, a Belarusian opposition figure, was arrested in December 2022 and sentenced to three years in prison for “defamation” of the president. His state of health had deteriorated significantly in prison.

Repression has been in full swing in Belarus since the 2020 presidential election deemed fraudulent and won by Alexander Lukashenko. According to the NGO Viasna, Belarus currently has more than 1,400 political prisoners. He is the fifth political prisoner to die in custody since 2021, according to the same source.
