In 2021, the duration of paternity leave was increased from 11 to 25 days in France. The measure affects all fathers, whether they are employees, self-employed or farmers.

The Court of Auditors notes that "fathers who use this leave have taken an average of 22 days of leave", against the 11 days taken in full by fathers before 2021. Thus, of the €3.6 billion in maternity and paternity leave expenditure in 2021, €357 million was spent on paternity leave alone.
