Violence erupted in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur between two ethnic groups. Among the tens of thousands who were displaced were thousands of Jews from the Bnei Menashe community.

The synagogue in a Jewish village, which was and is no longer after it burned to the ground, also went up in flames. The incident began after a rally in Churchandpur, Manipur's largest city, where thousands of Kuki-Mizo students demonstrated. They protested against plans to allow Mighty, the state's majority group, to receive special status.
