Cairns is a small seaside town bordered by the Coral Sea, in the northeast of the Australian continent. The city is best known today to divers for its proximity to the Great Barrier Reef.

Cairns belongs to the Wet Tropics of Queensland, a region of nearly 450 km along the northeast coast of Australia. The region is home to rivers, waterfalls, mountains, gorges and tropical forests which contain the largest number of rare or endangered plant and animal species in the world.
