The mission is intended to protect merchant ships from attacks by the Houthi militia, which has been heavily armed by Iran. The Houthis operating from Yemen want to force an end to the Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip by shelling ships, which are a response to the terrorist attack by the Islamist Hamas on October 7th. The EU operation, on the other hand, is purely defensive.
