Opposition leader Yaya Dillo was killed, prosecutor Oumar Mahamat Kedelaye said. Heavy gunfire was heard on Wednesday in the capital N'Djamena near the headquarters of its opposition party.

The violence erupted amid tensions ahead of a presidential election scheduled for May and June. By Thursday morning, calm had returned to the capital and residents were returning to work. Internet access, which had been blocked the day before, had still not been restored, a Reuters witness said.
