engine manufacturer MTU is probably the first German industrial group to drill for geothermal energy. The company will soon be able to supply its factories where it produces aircraft engines with heat.

This saves 56 gigawatt hours of natural gas per year - about as much as 1,000 single-family homes use. MTU wants to become climate neutral by 2045. Upper Bavaria has the best conditions forGeothermal energy, says Stefan Lange, project manager for MTU's project in Karlsfeld, Bavaria. But only a few companies have tapped into the earth in the area so far. The area is rich in layers that are millions of years old and warm by the earth's core, Lange says. The project is likely to be a complete success, says Lange. But the company does not want to reveal more precise figures - they expect that the matter will have paid for itself after just seven years. But BMW, MAN and BMWsber wants to drill together with the municipality of Milsfeld.
