The suspect was sent for psychiatric observation. The couple's bodies were discovered on Friday afternoon after neighbors alerted police due to a strong smell of gas coming from the apartment. At first, the police thought the bodies belonged to the mother and son. It was suspected that the father had committed the murder. Later it turned out that the bodies were those of Olivia and Sergei Popov.
