Republican state Rep. Don Wilson left a loaded 9mm Glock handgun on a shelf in a small bathroom at the Capitol.

Authorities determined he did not violate any laws. “I made a mistake and I am very sorry,” Wilson said Thursday in a statement. ‘This is a humbling experience and I will reaffirm my commitment to responsible (weapons) handling procedures,’ he said. The speaker of the state House of Representatives, Democrat Julie McCluskie, admonished Wilson, stating that “this incident created a dangerous situation.” “A Republican lawmaker recklessly leaving a loaded gun in a public bathroom only demonstrates the very need for gun safety policies like those pushed by Democrats,” state Senate President Steve Fenberg said in a letter to the state governor, who is also a Republican. The incident was not the first time a gun has been mishandled at the Colorado State Capitol. A congressional candidate for the 4th District dropped his gun outside the House chamber as he headed to a vote in 2022.
