Several thousand people with disabilities currently have no specialized structure to accommodate them near their homes, or even in France. Due to a lack of places in France or waiting lists over several years, a number of them have been forced into exile in Belgium.
Many parents are forced to leave their jobs to take full-time care of their disabled children. The France was condemned by the Council of Europe last April for failing to respect the fundamental rights of people with disability. The government insists on the development of home support, but families warn of their real needs.
