Display of the origin of meat used as an ingredient in processed products is to be mandatory. The law will apply to meat purchased already prepared or cooked.
It will also apply to beef, pork, lamb, veal and other meat products that have already been produced. Any breach of the law will be punishable by a fine of up to 7,500 euros (about $10,000) The law was passed in response to a request from the European Commission. It is the first time the law has been applied in this way.
