Dominican Republic becomes the first in the Caribbean to achieve the objectives of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Between January and February of this year, the Beata Expedition managed to identify more than 400 species and 148 morphospecies, from large megafauna organisms, such as the sperm whale, to microorganisms such as copepods, crustaceans measuring less than a millimeter.

“Within the Greater Antilles, we would be the country with the highest proportion of protected area in deep ocean waters,” said Jonathan Delance, member of the Vice Ministry of Coastal and Marine Resources. Since the Cordillera is a shared space, both countries signed in 2022 an agreement to protect it and to act together.
