Dozens of people were trapped in tunnels, under buildings or routes blocked by huge rocks after the earthquake in Taiwan. The death toll so far stands at 9 dead and 800 injured.

The remote, mountainous Hualien region was rocked by massive landslides. The tremors were felt as far away as the capital, Taipei, and videos show buildings shaking violently. The earthquake initially caused tsunami warnings on the island and neighboring countries, which have since been lifted. The earthquake occurred on the eve of a four-day long weekend, from Thursday to Sunday.
