A 7.4 magnitude earthquake was recorded this Wednesday on the island. Several deaths have been reported.

This is the most powerful earthquake to shake Taiwan in 25 years. In September 1999, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake killed 2,400 people. It was the worst disaster in Taiwan's modern history. The tremor struck very close to the east coast of the island just before 8:00 a.m. local time. Several aftershocks followed one another in the same area. Tremors were felt as far away as the capital, Taipei.
