President of the Republic of Latvia is the first openly gay person to hold the post. The new president, Edgars Rinkevics, will serve a four-year term.

"I am honoured and humbled to be the president of Latvia," he said after the election. The country is one of the few in the world to allow gay people to live in peace with their partners and in public life. It is also the only country in Europe to allow same-sex couples to live together.
