French President Emmanuel Macron announced March 10 that a bill on “assisted dying’ would arrive in Parliament next May. Other European countries have already legislated on the subject.

In 2001, the Netherlands was the first in Europe to legalize active euthanasia. In 2009, Luxembourg decriminalized euthanasia and assisted suicide, which refers to killing oneself with the help of a person who provides a means to do so. In 2022, authorities observed a jump in the practice: that year, deaths by euthanasia accounted for nearly 1 in 20 people.
