A new crater has formed on the most active Sicilian volcano in Europe. The next day, spectacular smoke rings began to appear in the sky.

This rare phenomenon is caused by the combination of rapid gas release and certain types of winds. These fumes did not cause any disruption in the surrounding villages or at Catania airport, which is regularly closed due to the volcanic eruptions of Mount Etna. No volcano on Earth produces as many steam cycles as Etna, says a volcanologist in Catania.
