The EU Commission wants to present a proposal for the reform of the tobacco tax by the end of the year. In Germany, the smoking rate has recently risen again.

The minimum consumption tax per 1000 cigarettes in Germany should rise from 115 euros to 230 euros. In the case of cigars and cigarillos, an increase in the minimum excise duty to nine times the value was envisaged. In addition to the tax reform, the Commission is planning new measures to reduce the dangers posed by nicotine. The aim is to have the first tobacco-free generation in Europe by 2040.
