[HIGHLIGHTS] European Prosecutor's Office, Italy first for damage to the Union budget

Italy is the country with the highest value in terms of financial damage to the EU budget estimated following various embezzlements. Of these, 5.22 billion derive from VAT fraud.

Italy is also first for investigations launched into financing linked to NextGenerationEU: 179 out of a total of 206 active investigations at the end of 2023. This is what emerges from the analysis of the data contained in the document released today by Eppo, the body that operates in close connection with the Guardia di Finanza.
