Italian supervolcano Campi Flegrei last erupted in 1538. Over the past 70 years the volcano has been very turbulent.

Tens of thousands of small earthquakes have been measured during this period. Earthquakes are shifted due to the faults stretching the crust of the volcano. The pattern of the earthquakes suggests the rock does not react elastically: it breaks rather than bends. It is important that we are all prepared for developments that are all that we need to decipher the volcano, says lead author.
