Fatal mix-up: couple from Austria eats what they believe is wild garlic – and dies. The dangerous doppelgangers can be recognized based on a few characteristics.

Wild garlic has white, star-shaped flowers and broad, oval leaves with a matte underside that grow directly from the stem. Lily of the valley also has white flowers, although they are bell-shaped. Autumn Citroses have a purple flower. Its leaves are oblong-oval with a shiny underside; they grow out of the rosette without stalks.
