First German settler in America: The Bavarian Franz Pastorius founded Germantown. Today it is a beautiful part of Philadelphia.

Pastorius was born in Sommerhausen, Würzburg district, in 1651. He lived in Bad Windsheim for ten years before completing his law studies in Altdorf, Strasbourg, Basel and Jena. In Frankfurt he came into contact with the Quaker movement, through which he finally came to America after 1683.
