Saudi Arabia announced Tuesday evening that it is resuming the activity of its diplomatic mission in Syria. The decision follows the Arab League's announcement earlier this week that it was returning Syria to its seat in the regional organization.

The move was taken as part of Jordan's initiative to resolve the Syrian crisis after more than 12 years of civil war. The Arab states' interest in cooperation with the Assad regime is linked to several issues: the problem of drug smuggling at the borders, as well as arms smuggling and the humanitarian crisis leading to epidemics.
