Lombard Autonomous League was registered by Umberto Bossi at the notary on 12 April 1984. Bossi is the only one to enter parliament: for his supporters he becomes the 'Senatùr' The party presents itself in coalition with the Venetian League and the Piedmont League.

In '94, the first turning point came when Lega Nord-Padania supported the Berlusconi government. Today, with the leadership of Roberto Maroni, the Northern League's secretariat is in a state of crisis. The party's leader is the former Prime Minister of Italy, Matteo Renzi, who has been forced to step down due to ill health. The Northern League is now the largest party in the Italian parliament, with a majority of more than 40 per cent of the vote, according to a recent poll. The next election will take place in March 2015, and the party is hoping to win a majority in the national parliament, as well as the European Parliament.
