Democratic Party (PD) leader Elly Schlein expressed satisfaction that the G7 stressed the need for de-escalation in the Middle East. The leader of the opposition, centre-left group spoke to Premier Giorgia Meloni on Sunday.

A joint declaration "unequivocally" condemning the attack was adopted by G7 Heads of State and Government. "The PD has forcefully called for a ceasefire, for the release of the hostages (held by Hamas) and for humanitarian aid to be delivered," Schlein told theForeign Press Association in Rome.  "We (Meloni and I) clash over everything in domestic politics, but we dialogue on issues such as these," he said.   "It is important to find terrain for dialogue in international politics", Schlein said.  The G7, under Italy's duty presidency, condemned last weekend's attack by Iran on Israel as a "barbaric act of aggression" and a "grave violation of international humanitarian law"
