The president of the Government, Pere Aragonès, has outlined a proposal to be able to take on more long-haul flights. The proposal involves modifying the operation of the slopes during two summer months, from ten in the morning to two in the afternoon.

The Minister of Transport, Óscar Puente, has rejected that possibility, ensuring that it is “short-range” and that it would bother the residents of Gavà Mar. The Catalan Executive's proposal would allow us to go from the current 78 flights per hour to a capacity of 90, the maximum foreseen in the environmental impact declaration of the infrastructure. This would be possible if during July and August, the high season months, two of the three runways are used simultaneously for landings and takeoffs. The Government, insists in the proposal document, believes that Aena “oversizes” the limitations of the Barcelona airport. It is currently at the limit of 55 million passengers per year and the proposal to expand Aena's runway clashed with the reduction of tourist pressure.
