Greece has one of the lowest fertility rates in Europe, falling from 1.5 children per woman in 2012 to 1.3 in 2019. The population is aging all the more as the number of centenarians, undoubtedly on the Cretan diet, continues to grow.

In 2020, the conservative government decided to take the lead by allocating a bonus of 2,000 euros to each new birth. Four years later, it is clear that the measure is far from sufficient. “  births continue to decline,” admits Sofia Zacharakis, Minister of Social Cohesion.
