Scientists have succeeded in transplanting embryos of a northern broad-lipped rhinoceros. Success of the transplant gives the researchers hope that they will be able to save the species.

There are only two individuals of this subspecies in nature, a mother and her daughter. Due to their cultural importance and the huge heritage placed on them, they are surrounded by armed forces 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The scientists had previously hoped to fertilize the two females by the only remaining male, but even before his death he was sickly and weak.
