"In recent days, we have witnessed a dangerous escalation, a miscalculation, or a communication error could lead to the unthinkable, a large-scale regional conflict which would be devastating," he added. "We must work together to prevent any action that could push the entire Mideast over the edge, with a devastating impact on the civilian population," he added, calling for global diplomatic action to ease tension in the region.
"The risks are increasing on many fronts, and we have a shared responsibility to address these risks and bring the region back from the precipice," he concluded.
