Rosenheim hail pilots are also responsible for the Miesbach district. The “Ro-Bert” research project has been running since 2007 between the Rosenheim district office, for which hail protection is used, and the university.

Radar data and information from the German Weather Service about the intensity of precipitation and the distribution of water and ice particles in the air can be used to determine what the “structure of the cloud” looks like. This gives the pilot a kind of “X-ray view through the cloud into the center of the hail.” And almost more importantly: “Based on this distribution, you can see where thecenter of the storm is,” says Peter Zentgraf, professor of engineering at the TH, who has been in charge of the project since 2010. In the future, the system will become even better at determining the position and accuracy of the radar data and transmit the images in real time to a display in the cockpit.
