Heat and drought force the Canary Islands to prematurely activate the forest fire plan. The risk of fires is “unusually very high” after 72% less rain than usual on the islands in winter.

Last summer, the island suffered the worst of the fires in 2023, affecting more than 15,000 hectares, 72% of the total forest mass. The situation has no signs of improving: Aemet expects the coming quarters to continue to be warmer and drier than normal.
