Hong Kong's new national security law came into force on Saturday. It provides for life sentences for offenses including treason and insurrection.

Western countries have expressed alarm at the new law, which complements Beijing's 2020 law. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on Friday expressed "deep concern" that the law would be used to undermine rights and reduce dissenting voices. Protests against the law are expected around the world, from Australia and Britain to Canada and Taipei, some brandishing “villain’s signs”
