Housing shortages and vacancies are on a par - why Germany is still in a housing crisis. There is a shortage of over 600,000 apartments across Germany.

At the same time there are also thousands of vacant properties ready to move into. In less than a quarter of the municipalities the housing market is in balance. The construction industry is in deep crisis and rents are rising rapidly. The federal government wants to make regions with vacant properties more attractive. The government also believes there needs to be incentives to move to structurally weak regions.
