Housing shortages and vacancies are on a par - why Germany is still in a housing crisis. There is a shortage of over 600,000 apartments across Germany.

However, almost the same number of apartments are vacant and ready for occupancy. In less than a quarter of the municipalities the housing market is in balance. The federal government wants to make regions with vacant properties more attractive. In addition to the pure housing shortage, the federal government believes there needs to be incentives to move to the countryside.
