Hungarian President Katalin Novak announced her resignation on Saturday February 10. Novak's decision to pardon a convict involved in a child crime case last April caused outrage in Hungary.

In March 2022, Novak will become the first woman to occupy this essentially ceremonial function. She acknowledged having made “an error’ in her decision to grant a pardon to a convicted child sex offender in April 2013. The pardon was later overturned by a court of law and the convict was sentenced to life in prison.
