The UN Security Council met urgently on Wednesday regarding the escalation of deadly violence raging in Haiti. The country, which is among the poorest in the world, has been the prey of violent riots in recent days.

Criminal gangs, which control the majority of the capital Port-au-Prince and the main roads that wind through the territory, have attacked a police academy, airports and even several prisons. Armed groups are demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry, in power since the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse.
