In Iran, legislative elections accentuate the exclusion of reformers. A strong abstention is expected on Friday, during the first elections since the major wave of protests in the fall of 2022.

Experts expect a record abstention, probably above 50%, especially in Tehran, the capital, where only 26% of voters voted in the last legislative elections of 2020. The capital has been one of the epicenters of a protest movement unprecedented in its scale, triggered in September 2022 by the death of Mahsa Amini, a young woman arrested by the police.
