More than 5,000 schools have closed across the Southeast Asian archipelago, affecting more than 3.6 million students. The months of March, April and May are generally the hottest and driest in the Philippines.

Felt temperatures, taking into account humidity, were expected to reach the “dangerous” level of 42 or 43 degrees in several parts of the country on Friday. In the capital Manila, where a felt temperature of 40 degrees was forecast, residents were urged to exercise “extreme caution”
