More than one-third of American women of reproductive age are deficient in iron. Iron deficiency and anemia can have adverse effects on the mother and fetus.

Iron is found in plant-based foods, such as lentils and beans, as well as meat, fish and dairy products. If you are concerned about your iron levels, talk to your doctor about taking iron supplements every two weeks or more, depending on your age. If your iron level is low, you should see your doctor every three months.
