Khan Yunis in the south of the sealed-off coastal area is considered an important base for the Islamist Hamas. More than 33,000 Palestinians have been killed in the past six months, including scores of women, children, medics, journalists and aid workers. The war was triggered by Hamas' terrorist attack on the Israeli border area on October 7th, in which more than 1,200 people were killed.
