Ultra-Orthodox Jews are no longer officially exempt from performing their military service in the Israeli army. Decision came into force after the failure of the Netanyahu government on Thursday to obtain validation of its bill from the Supreme Court to extend the measure.

“It’s a real earthquake for Israeli society,” says David Khalfa, co-director of the North Africa and Middle East Observatory of the Jean-Jaurès Foundation. A change which goes in the direction of an ‘inevitable process’ of integration of the ultraorthodox into Israeli society.
