Israel and Iran have been immersed in a violent dynamic of action and reaction for years. The Iranian operation, called True Promise, has been very elementary and one might even think rudimentary.

None of the actors directly involved in this situation, except Benjamin Netanyahu, are interested in an escalation that leads to an open regional war, writes Aaron Miller. Miller: Since the punishment operation in Gaza began, Iran had made it clear that it was not willing to provoke a regional escalation. It was worth it, he says, because Netanyahu has opted for “the better” in his desire to remain in power at all costs, after having been identified as the main person responsible for the failure by his own society, Miller says.. The attack launched early Sunday morning by Iran against Israel is, therefore, not the beginning of anything, but rather the continuation of a process that, surely, will be followed by an Israeli reply.. It is not, in any case, just another attack, if only for the fact that on this occasion, instead of resorting to some of its regional allies so that the launch of drones and missiles would occur from foreign sources of fire, Tehran has decided to do it from its own soil.
