Israel virulently opposes Palestinian membership in the UN. Since 2012, the Palestinians have had “non-member observer state” status.

Last week they officially revived a request dating from 2011 to become a full member. For the request to succeed, it would first require a positive recommendation from the Security Council (at least 9 votes in favor), then a two-thirds majority vote in the General Assembly. But observers doubt that the initiative will pass the Council stage due to the position of the United States.
