Italian industrial turnover fell by 3.1% in value terms and 2.6% in volume in January with respect to December. The national statistics agency said turnover was down in year-on-year terms too.

Istat said its services turnover index, on the other hand, increased by 1.6%, 1.7% and 3.8% compared to January 2023. The figures were released by Istat in seasonally adjusted terms on Friday, according to the agency's website. The data was released on the back of a report by the Italian Ministry of Economy, Finance and Industry. The report was published on Thursday, the day after the European Commission released its own report on the Italian economy. The European Commission said the report was based on seasonally-adjusted data and did not give a cause for the fall in industrial turnover. It said the fall was due to a fall in the value of goods and a rise in the volume of goods sold in the month of January compared to the previous year.
