The celebrations begin on the eve of January 27th in Monaco with the traditional burning of a wooden fishing boat in front of the Sainte-Dévote church. According to legend, the Christian martyr was tortured to death in Corsica in the 4th century AD. While the body was being transported to Africa by ship, a dove is said to have emerged from her mouth and guided the boat to Monaco.
