Johnny Depp, Catherine Deneuve and Ruben Östlund among those to open the Cannes Film Festival. Chiara Mastroianni, the mistress of ceremonies, has insisted on the "emotion" of the festival.
The festival seems to feel guilty for being a place of celebration, writes David Bianculli.
