The Kakhovka dam, an important reservoir on the banks of the Dnieper River, began to collapse around 02.00 local time, according to Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski. At least 150 tonnes of motor oil were spilled into the river and there is a risk of further leaks of more than 300 tonnes.

The Kremlin flatly denied being behind the destruction of the dam and said it was "deliberate sabotage" by Kiev. The Investigative Committee has subsequently opened a criminal case for "terrorist attack"
