Actress Margit Carstensen died on Thursday (1 June) at the age of 83. She is best known for her roles in the productions of director Rainer Werner Fassbinder.

For years, the heavy smoker suffered from pulmonary emphysema, which made it difficult for her to breathe. In 1973 she was voted Best Actress of the Year by German film critics. She received the Götz George Prize for her life's work in 2019. For her performance in The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant ( 1973) she received the Filmband in Gold and the Bavarian Film Award.
