César Montes was convicted of the murder of three soldiers in an indigenous community in 2019. The former commander of the Rebel Armed Forces was captured in 2020 by Interpol and transferred to the Central American country.

The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has reported on Monday that he is "looking at the possibility" that the Government of Guatemala pardons the former guerrilla. Montes pleaded his innocence during the trial and claimed that he did not give the order to attack the military.
